Bio

Frazar Henry is the critically lauded, multi-award winning, eighth grade, home-schooled composer/pianist residing in Bonita Springs, FL. Days before all our worlds came to a screeching halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Henry finished with a flourish, winning—in just one weekend—1st Place in the Miami Music Teachers Foundation Composition Contest for Pitch and Decay, 1st Place, Piano Concerto in the Frost International Young Artists Competition, and 1st Place, Solo Piano in the Frost International Young Artists Competition!

In addition to winning the ASCAP Foundation 2018 Morton Gould Young Composer Award for his orchestral overture In Exordium—Henry’s second ASCAP/Morton Gould honor in three years—he won 1st Prize for Piano in the 2019 Music Foundation of Greater Naples Scholarship Competition and has been the State Winner (Florida) of the MTNA Composition Competition two years running. Henry has also garnered notable awards and recognition from the Tribeca New Music 2020 National Young Composer Competition, the 2019 Tampa Bay Symphony 4th annual Call for Scores Composition Competition, and the 2019 Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York’s Emerging Composers Competition, as well as winning First Place in multiple divisions of the FGCU/Steinway Piano Society Young Artist Piano Competition.

Henry premiered three new works in 2019. In February, his Saxophone Quartet Keyshot received its premier performance at the FGCU Bower School of Music. In April, his Messiaen Quartet Birdsong premiered in Portland, OR by fEARnoMUSIC at its 2019 Young Composer Project. And in May, his String Quartet Going Around was given its premier performance by Artis—Naples Philharmonic Orchestra in its annual chamber runout series for music education and appreciation. Henry’s first new work of 2020 premiered when he performed Pitch and Decay (for solo piano) at the Music Foundation of Greater Naples Annual Fundraising Gala, “An American Affair” Friday, January 17, 2020.

When he isn’t glued to a piano, guitar, ukulele or a ream of staff paper (real or digital), Henry spends his time learning to tap dance, to speak French, Italian, German and Spanish, singing, riding his bicycle or playing MORPGs and MMOs with his friends in Florida and his family in Oregon. What an astonishing talent!...If you are interested in finding out how serious and capable this young composer is listen to this composition of his which he penned...at the ripe age of...nine. I feel so envious. I did not start composing until I was seventeen and my works at that time were nowhere nearly as interesting as this one...People should be aware of his talent.
Christos Hatzis (Professor: Composition)University of Toronto, Faculty of Music
Frazar is such an amazingly talented composer - rich and varied in so many ways - it is heartening to hear such natural talent in today's world.
Thomas Michael Sleeper (Director of Orchestral Activities, Music Director/Conductor)

Frazar displays impressive technical skill and an outstanding command of the piano. His musicality is beyond his young age, near masterful. His sensitivity is extraordinary.
